LauraMakesThings

Laura C. Baran is an interdisciplinary artist, from St. Petersburg, Florida. She pursued her BFA in Fine Arts and Art History at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, where she graduated Cum Laude in 2016. Since then, Laura has been working with various art organizations and showing her work internationally, having spent significant time in both Barcelona and Berlin.&#38;nbsp;


Artist Statement &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

At times, the environment we find ourselves in reflects our inner life, physically mirroring the emotional and spiritual landscape inside of us. The objects around us can be memory keepers, giving us space to reflect and freeze time, or they can be indicative of our present state, personality, and what we hope to grow into. 
My work plays with this exchange between the invisible and the physical, taking inspiration from found objects and nature in everyday life to establish thoughtful correlations between what we see physically and what we feel internally.

We photograph the moments we want to keep, even though our memories of those moments will still shift in time. We collage them together, fold them like paper, and repeat the cycle-&#38;nbsp; the condensation of memories becoming like a musical chord.

Grief is gentle. She gives you her hand, and asks to sit with you for a while. And she whispers, we can do it.

	Abschieds Gesicht

Jeder Abschied hat sein eigenes Gesicht. 

Mal ist es runzlig, mal faltenfrei und mit warmen Augen. 

Gerne sehe ich diese Gesichter nicht. Immer wenn mich eins besuchen kommt, fängt mein Herz hektisch an zu flattern, wie ein Huhn, das gerade gefangen wurde.

 Abschied ist mir ein Tritt in die Magengrube, eine Ohrfeige, die mich aus dem Halbschlaf weckt. Manchmal überfällt ein Abschied mich von hinten, trifft mich unvorbereitet. Manchmal flüstert ein Abschied anfangs ganz leise und wird immer lauter, wie Musik, die aufgedreht wird, bis sie nicht mehr zu ertragen ist. Und manchmal sehe ich ihn schon von weitem näherkommen, erwarte ihn voller Grauen.

 Jeder Abschied hat sein eigenes Gesicht. Sag mir, wie siehst du diesmal aus?

 Jung bist du nicht. 

Eher von den Jahren geprägt, die wir zusammen hier verbracht haben. Deine Augen erzählen verschmitzt von durchtanzten Nächten und spontanen Baggerseebesuchen. Deine Lachfalten haben sich an den vielen verquatschten Nachmittagen in gemütlichen Cafés vertieft. Und dein Mund, ja dein Mund hat viel gekostet. Salzige Tränen, bittere Pillen und süße Stückchen. Auch deine Wangen waren mal voller Idealismus gerötet. Jetzt sind sie etwas blasser.

Du sprichst mich an.

Verlangst von mir die Hände zu öffnen und all das loszulassen.

Kein schlafwandlerisches durch den Aldi laufen und das Gleiche wie immer kaufen. Keine Straßen, deren Schlaglöcher ich blind umfahre. Keinen Spezialteller beim Falafel zum tausendsten Mal bestellen.

Es schmerzt körperlich, die Hände zu öffnen, wenn noch offen ist, was sich Neues darin ablegen wird. Ich springe von einem Trapez und weiß nicht, wer mich fängt.

Du verlangst viel von mir, Abschied.

Hier habe ich es zugelassen, dass Wurzeln sich in den Boden graben, ich habe lieben und lachen und weinen gelernt. Ich bin verwoben mit diesem Ort, mit den Menschen hier. Wurzeln hievt man nicht einfach aus dem Boden. Jetzt sind sie endlich gewachsen, lass sie doch stehen. Siehst du nicht, was hier alles erblüht ist? 

Wozu alles rausreißen – was gibst du mir dafür? Neue Karten teilst du aus, das stimmt. Neue Karten, die ihre Vielleichts mit sich bringen.

Vielleicht ist ein Neuanfang jetzt genau das Richtige.

Vielleicht werde ich dort ebenfalls überraschende Freundschaften knüpfen. 

Vielleicht passen meine Ecken dort etwas besser.

Eine neue Runde fängt an, und sie weckt meine Hoffnung, dass längst begrabene Träume woanders wieder erwachen könnten.

Doch all diese Vielleichts mischen sich mit der Wucht vom Abschied.

Ja, Abschieds Gesicht, jetzt bist du eben hier. Und ich muss dir lassen: du schaffst es, mich neu dankbar zu machen. 

Doch lieben werde ich dich nicht.
	

	The Hole


I run my fingers across the edge. It is rough and sharp and deep. 
The black hole has no shape, it seems without end. I didn’t see where it came from, it felt like it was just there, as if it had always been there.
What is it for? Is it waiting to be filled? Is there anything, anybody who fits?
It itches, it aches, it keeps me awake. It’s hard to find rest, the hole pulses through me. I need to make this itching stop. My eyes dart right and left, harassed by some unrest to quench. 
And so I grab you, tell you to fit in and once I see you don't quite do, I take your legs and arms and bend them and push you in and make you fit.
 I take love and knead it together until it seems to fill the hole. I press it in, deeper and deeper, but it’s not enough and I need to stuff in some more. My hands frantically work and grab more and more.
But it is hopeless, endless.
As a last resort I throw ropes across the abyss and knit a net over the hole. I put one foot on it to see whether it holds. It is bouncy and it feels good and miraculously holds my weight. I put my other foot on. Slowly I sway. Yes, this carries me. Shakily I set a foot ahead and another. 
In the middle of the hole I take a deep breath. The air seems lighter here and I stretch out to taste the sun. Yet I can't reach it, and so I bounce up, a bit and again, a bit more.
Jumping
I notice that it is through my hole, that I draw nearer to the sun.


	Innenleben


Ich greif mir tief in den Hals, pack feste zu und ziehe dich heraus. Du hast dich eingraben, in meine Organe festgesetzt. Doch jetzt musst du raus. Lange genug hab ich mich mit dir abgegeben.
Ich ziehe hartnäckig Stück für Stück an dir. Doch du wehrst dich, widerstrebst meinem Griff. Meine Organe stoßen dich ab. Dein Griff wird lockerer, deine eisigen Finger gleiten an meinen Innenwänden ohne Halt. Erste Anzeichen vom Ende eines langen Kampfes.
Ich und du, wir kennen uns schon lange. Wie oft ich versuchte dich loszuwerden? Ich habe aufgegeben zu zählen.
Dein Griff lockert sich. Ich ziehe fester. Es kommen die Hände zuerst, dein Arm folgt. Alles ist beschmiert, dreckig, es riecht faulig. Dann der Kopf. Es folgt der Rumpf. Du bist groß, mein Mund ist weit aufgerissen, ich atme erstickt.
Irgendwann ist es geschafft.
Alles von dir ist raus, den letzten Fuß hab ich ausgespuckt.
Ich hole tief Luft, schaue dich an.
Endlich bist du nicht mehr Teil von mir.
	

Ach Marie

Du und deine scheiß Marie Kondo, rufe ich dir nach.
Ich bücke mich, hol den Weihnachtsstrumpf aus dem Müll und klopfe ihn liebevoll ab. Natürlich brauch ich ihn nicht mehr. Na klar ist er alt und abgewetzt.
Wenn ich ihn wegschmeiße – wie kann ich dann noch meine Erinnerungen anfassen? Der Strumpf lässt mich begreifen, dass es mal eine andere Welt gab.
Warum muss er immer Freude auslösen, reicht es nicht, wenn er eine Reliquie ist? Ein heiliger Ort, an den ich pilgere, wenn Sehnsucht mich treibt.
Denn ich will nicht wegwerfen, was ich schon mal verloren habe.


Trauer ist Sanft

Trauer ist sanft.

Sie ist ein junges Mädchen und eingeschüchtert.

Aber sie hat Fingerspitzengefühl

und reicht dir die Hand 

und bittet dich darum, etwas bei dir sitzen zu dürfen.

Unsere Handflächen berühren sich und die Welt bleibt nicht stehen – 

der befürchtete Blitz bleibt aus.

Alles was sie macht verströmt Heilung und Neuanfang.

Denn Trauer ist sanft.
